Why was Aston fearful of so many everyday things?

Aston is an English Cocker Spaniel, nearly two years of age. He is delightful, friendly and loving – but fearful.

Fearful of everyday things

Sadly, for both him and the couple who love him dearly, too many things in daily life scare him. They would like to be able to include him in all they do without scaring him.

These range from even the sight of a package brought to the door to happenings on walks. These are mostly associated with sudden or loud noises. When someone comes to the door he doesn’t know, he will hide.

On walks his instinct is to run if he can. It takes away all the enjoyment of a walk.

Aston has two walks a day. In the morning he’s a happy dog as it’s very early and they meet up with other dogs. This gives him courage.

The late afternoon walk is different.

It’s the same route as in the quiet morning, but there are lots of people, dogs and traffic. Noises and sudden things to be fearful of. Young children.

He can get worried in his own back garden too. Particularly if next-door’s young children are out and making a noise.

Unusually, Aston never barks!

There are four areas to work on:

  • Counter-conditioning to individual things like receiving or opening packages
  • Walks – with all change for the second walk
  • Working consistently on ad hoc sounds and alarm as it occurs
  • Building Aston’s general confidence with brainwork, searching and working for his food.

In place of the second walk

Instead of that second challenging walk they will work on his loose lead walking in the garden. They will slowly work their way out of their garden into their close which is quiet.

They can stand still and react positively to anything that they hear or that causes Aston to alert. They need a marker word and food.

It’s important to keep as far within fearful Aston’s comfort zone as they can. Doing this with each thing they are dealing with. To work slowly. They are very patient people.
